The Lady Vikings played their second home game of the season on Sept. 24.
As parents, grandparents, peers and Orcas High School alumni filed into the gym, the Vikings prepared to face Concrete. The first few plays of the set had Orcas behind, but the team quickly caught up. Despite a few close calls, the Lady Vikings swept the Concrete Lions in three. The final box score was 25-16, 20-25, 20-25. Lili Malo got Player of the Match for the game.
Following their exciting home match, The Vikings played Mount Vernon Christian off-island on Sept. 26. It was an intense game, with the Vikings losing the first set.
“We had many absent players that game due to sicknesses and important trips, and because of that, there were multiple people playing different positions to what they were used to,” said junior Vera Sasan.
It went to five sets and was a tough game, but in the end, the Vikings won. The final box score was 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 12-25, 15-12.
“I think we had to get used to a new setup, and once we were, everything was good, and we were able to eventually beat them,” said Sasan.
Orcas Island varsity volleyball is currently ranked second to Coupeville in the 1B/2B Northwest District.
“We are building each game as a team, and it is fun to watch how we gel as a unit. We have some tough games ahead, but I know if we set our minds right and work together, we will continue to do well this season,” said senior captain Ava Ashcraft.
