In May, the Lopez Golf Team played at the tri-district competition at the Gallery golf course, on Whidbey Island. There were eight teams represented that day, among them Life Christian, Grace Academy, Lopez, Orcas, La Conner, Rainier Christian and Kings West. Lopez placed second overall out of nine teams with 29 points allocated to their win. The teams that day played 18 holes and were represented by both entire teams and individuals at the tri-district level.
“The team that beat us ended up winning at state,” Coach Richard Tetu commented. “We made more team points as a second place team at district than the second place team did at state. We placed very well, in other words. The difference between this year and last year was that we had 17 spots to fill last year, but this year, we were only allocated seven spots.”
After tri-district play, Lopez took part in the northwest B league competition, which came after tri-district competition. The teams played 18 holes at the Avalon course in Burlington, Wash.
Tetu said, “It’s the best course in the world. It’s my first choice of anywhere to play.”
Lopez’ best showing was provided by Emily post van der Burg, who took second place in league play, followed by Helen O’Brien who took fourth, while Sydney Hoffman took sixth and Hannah Hobi took seventh. Overall, Lopez placed second out of three teams in league competition. The Lopez ladies were edged by Grace, who took it overall 53 to 60.
“For our gentlemen, our best placing was Colton Jardine, who came in seventh place and Alex Cook who took eighth place. This is a junior and a sophomore, so these are our younger students doing well. I was happy with that. The boys almost tied for second, and missed it by only a few strokes, sadly,” Tetu said.
No Lopez boys and no Lopez girls went to state this year; Sydney Hoffman was an alternate but did not go, and this concluded Lopez golf for the year.
