On Tuesday, the Lopez golf team played a good game of golf at Similk, but La Conner won the match that day by 40 strokes; 230-271. Lopez played six girls and six boys.
“The course was not our home course; but because of ferry schedules and so forth we had no time to warm up and this did affect our team’s play,” Coach Richard Tetu commented.
For the ladies’ game, Sydney Hoffman of Lopez Island was the medalist with a 57. Only one of the three La Conner girls showed up to play. Helen O’Brien shot a 59. Moira Crawford, Vilina Sanburn-Bill, Hannah Hobi, and Tammora Nedoroscik all played well but shot over par.
Eric Lindenman of La Conner won the medal for the game by shooting a 42. Colton Jardine shot a 45 while Kevin Dengler shot a 46. Alex Cook, Josh Cook, Teddy McCullough, and Alex Buffum all participated.
“Lots of people had good scores,” Tetu said. “It’s just a shame that there were so few women players from La Conner, and it was too bad that the opposing team’s coach had to leave before the match was over.”
Lopez’s last match of the season will be played at Grace Academy, at the Cedar Crest golf course in Marysville. It will be the last nine-hole match of the season before district play starts for high school golf in two weeks.
