Lopez Lobos vs Friday Harbor Wolverines
In the first game of the Interisland Volleyball Tournament at Lopez on Sept. 20, the Lopez Lobos succumbed to the Friday Harbor Wolverines in the best played 3 out of 5 games. Friday Harbor won the match overall.
Plagued by errors in the first couple of games, the Lopez Lobos quickly put their pre-game jitters aside and went at it with some aggressive net-play and points scored on kills in last-minute set ups. Though Friday Harbor dominated with points, the Lobos recovered several times from errors and gained focus and poise on the court throughout the games.
Gwenna Coiley attacked the ball ten times resulting in three kills. Emily PostvanderBurg attacked 30 times resulting in nine kills. Emily went five/five on her serves, with three aces scored overall. Erin Wilbur served seven/eight with one ace. Hanifa McGovern made four/six serves. Tamira Vojnar had two aces off her serves.
Orcas Vikings vs Friday Harbor Wolverines
In the second game of the tournament, the Orcas Vikings took out the Friday Harbor Wolverines in a complete five game match. In this of the titans, both teams contain seasoned veterans and displayed an intimidating degree of aggression at the front of the net.
Orcas won the first game 25/15; Friday Harbor won the second game with 19/25; Friday Harbor won the third game with 26/24; Orcas won 25/20 in the fourth game and Orcas won the final and defining game 15/3. The Vikings gained momentum during the match and eventually turned the tide and forced errors on the Wolverines, getting down to business and scoring points and minimizing mental errors on their side of the court.
Vikings Coach Greg Sasan said, “When I saw those young people carry themselves with confidence after a time out, I knew they would be ready to roll.”
Many of the Orcas Vikings had great personal games; these included Kathryn Tidwell, a Freshman, whose underhand serve alone netted the Vikings a total of 11 points, April Hoffman, with several kills at the net and various set ups, Emma Gallo-Chasanoff with several acing serves, Anika Thomas with more kills, and Sydney Harris who had multiple attacks at the net and several more kills.
Lopez Lobos vs Orcas Vikings
In the final game of the day, the Lopez Lobos went down to the Orcas Vikings in a series of vigorous and spirited games.
The Lopez Lobos came on strong, winning 22/25 in the first game, then Lopez again won 25/19. The Orcas Vikings answered strongly in the third game, owning that set with 25/22. Then it was Orcas again, leading the scoring on the court which resulted in a win for 15/9. The Orcas Vikings won three out of four games, and had to leave early to catch the ferry.
Coach Sasan said, “It was a fun game for Orcas. We haven’t played Lopez in a long time. Coach [Mellonie] Altona is doing a great job with her young players. They’re very aggressive, very go-to.”
Coach Altona commented: “My players are learning to chat out there, and call the ball. Errors were made on mistakes at the net and on set ups, but overall I was really pleased with their focus and their recoveries.”
The Lopez Girls Volleyball Team plays again on Sept. 23, Tuesday, at Skykomish, and at home on Sept. 26, Friday, with Lummi.
The Orcas Girls Volleyball Team plays again on Sept. 23 on Orcas against Friday Harbor at 5:45 p.m.
