The Lopez track team took second place overall in an area-wide track meet that included La Conner, Concrete, Friday Harbor, St. Paul’s Academy, and Lummi. Lopez, competing in a variety of events, came in second in both boys’ and girls’ events.
Concrete, in league 2B, won the event but Lopez is still undefeated in its league, 1B. La Conner won the track meet that day, Lopez came in second, with Concrete third, Friday Harbor placing fourth, St. Paul’s Academy taking fifth and Lummi taking sixth place.
“Lyra Dalton placed first in the triple jump, with a personal best score,” Coach Steve Wilbur said. “This puts her in a very strong position for competition at state. Laura and Lyra both did exceptionally well.”
Other highlights include Erin Wilbur, who placed fourth in the 200 meter run. It was her personal best for that event. Laura Strom also placed fifth and it was the first time she had run the event. Shin splints prevented her from taking part in the running events earlier in the year.
For girls, the other notable performance was Dalton’s 6.07 minute mile and Wilbur’s 300 meter low hurdles. Wilbur had a 55.45 and knocked a second off of her previous personal best.
The Lopez boys had an outstanding day, coming in second overall. Sebastian Lasbo ran a 4.57.35 minute mile (1600 meters), taking first place in the event as well as making the time his personal best.
“Emmett Lawrence had a huge performance, taking first in the 400 meter run, with 55.28,” Wilbur said. “He has a very solid position at state as does Sebastian Lasbo. Leland Nopson threw 39 feet 6 inches in the shotput event. Leland has been throwing 34 feet all season, so this was a huge improvement, and he took first place.”
Lopez took six first place finishes out of ten events.
