On Saturday, Feb. 7, the Lady Vikings assured a second place berth in their league after beating the Darrington Lady Loggers.
They handily trounced the LaConner Lady Braves in front of a packed house on Tuesday, Feb. 10, with a final score of 36-27. The Lady Braves, who had a 10-0 record in their league and who are ranked 9th in the state, could not vanquish the Lady Vikings once they got rolling.
Coach Terry Moran-Hodge said, “We started out poorly in the first quarter, but in the third quarter we really rallied. We were down before the half by one point. Then Laney (Padbury) got a rebound with three seconds left in the half, turned, dribbled towards the basket, and let fly a 50 foot shot for a three pointer and the crowd just went crazy. Clearly, when we came back out onto the court in the third quarter, the momentum was left over from that amazing shot and we outscored La Conner 16-3 in the fourth quarter. Maddy Smith scored nine points alone in the third quarter. It was senior night as well, and we had a special ceremony to honor the seniors Maddy Smith, Halley Parnell, Sydney Harris, and Anika Thomas for their outstanding contributions to athletics and to Orcas.”
Maddy Smith led the Lady Vikings in scoring with nine points while Stephanie Shaw had eight points. Eight out of nine players put points up. Anika Thomas had six points and Laney Padbury had five while Sydney Harris had four. Thomas led rebounds with 11, Parnell had seven rebounds and led in assists, and Shaw also had four assists for Orcas.
Since the Lady Vikings beat both Darrington and La Conner, this means that they have clinched the home playoff game. Their next opponent will be from the Seatac League and that team was determined last weekend, after the Sounder went to press. The Lady Vikings have won six games in a row in their league and are looking forward to playing the Seatac team in post-season play on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at the Orcas High School. This game represents the first of two playoff games that the Lady Vikings must win in order to advance to state.
