The boys’ golf team was determined to go undefeated this season, and thus far they have accomplished their goal, with a 10-0 regular season record. The girls, all first-year players, have worked hard and made great strides in their games.
Both golf teams played Lopez and La Conner Tuesday, April 27 at the Lopez Island Golf Club.
The Viking boys led with a 228, followed by La Conner with a 241 and Lopez with a 252. Taylor Diepenbrock, Henri Bredouw, and Alex Cook of Lopez each posted a 41 for a three-way tie for medalist. Miles McCloskey was hot on their heels with a 43, followed by Spencer Sare with a 47, Christopher Ghazel with a 48 and Alan Coe with a 52.
The Lady Vikes lost a close match by only seven strokes, scoring a 238 against La Conner, 231 and Lopez, 235. Jessica Giasullo shot a low of 58, followed by first time qualifier Clair O’Neill with a 59, Julia Bailey with a 60 and Tara O’Neill with a 61.
“These girls are so evenly matched and have battled some close matches all season. It will make for an interesting League Championship match on May 6 at Friday Harbor,” said coach Bobby Olmstead. “I am so proud of these young girls. They have all qualified to represent the Vikings at the district tournament and have done so in just their first year of playing golf. It shows what hard work and practice can accomplish.”
The Vikes’ last regular season match was played on a beautiful sunny afternoon against Riverside Christian Thursday, April 29. The boys blew away their competition 202-278. Diepenbrock took the medal with a 35, followed by McCloskey with a 38, Bredouw with a 39, Sare with a 43 and Coe with a 47.
“The boys played very well today,” said Olmstead. “Their scores are dropping just in time for the post season. We will send a strong team to the league and Tri-District tournaments again this year.
The girls lost a tough match, 174-149, for a 3-2 season record. Bailey shot a low score for the year at 55, followed by Clair O’Neill with a 59 and Ray with a 60.
“It is an exciting time for golf on Orcas, with the boys going undefeated,” said Olmstead. “That has never happened before. They are happy and excited, but have not lost the desire to get even better. They all are working hard to do well in the post season tournaments… All 19 players have worked hard and dropped their scores. It is an amazing group of players; I am so proud of them all.”
