The Orcas golf team played and won against the Lopez golf team on Tuesday, March 24, beating the Lopezians 231 to 302 on a very muddy course. The Orcas boys dominated in those 9 holes.
Coach Bobby Olmsted said, “Our medalists that day were Henry Bredouw who shot a 42 as well as Alan Coe who also shot a 42. Joe Boucher shot a 43. The fairway was a muddy mess, but we always have a great time with Richard Tetu and his team from Lopez.”
The Orcas girls hit well individually, with Cetacea Stanton hitting a 52 and Maddy Smith shooting a 55 which qualifies Smith for district play. The Lopez and Orcas girls’ teams tied that day with 107 points each.
In their next match on Thursday March 26, the Orcas golf team played again and beat Highland Christian 235 to 279.
Medalists for Orcas that day were Bredouw and Coe again, each with 39. It was Coe’s best round to date. Joe Boucher came in third with a 48 and Spencer Sare had a 49, which qualifies him for district play. Stanton, already qualified for district, shot a 52.
“The Tuesday match on March 30 in Friday Harbor will be tough,” Olmsted said. “Our weak spots for most of the young people run the gamut; we need to work on a little bit of everything. Some need work on the fairway, some need work on the putting green. Our mental aspect needs work. The young people as a group tend to get very down on themselves. Everybody is working hard and I am confident that all of them will drop their scores. I also have freshmen who dropped 12 strokes between Tuesday and Thursday. I am pleased with what I’m seeing.”
