With a boys’ “no contest” match, highlights for Orcas were first year player Devon Stanzione shooting a low Orcas score of 46, followed closely by returning state player Miles McCloskey with a 47.

The girls team lost 260 – 230. Courtney Ray shot a team low of 59.

“There were some great improvements in the girls team with Freeda Crow, Bynna Gregg and Aubrey Piaget, all first year players,” said coach Bobby Olmsted. “They are first time players and had never even hit a golf ball until the week before … There is still lots of work to be done, and they are all up for the challenge.”

March 23: home match against La Conner

The boys’ team lost a very close match, 250-241.

Miles McCloskey led with a low score of 42, and Christopher Ghazel was right on his heels with a season low of 43. Tommy Granger shot a 52; Graye Parnell a 56; Devon Stanzione a 57 and Doug Smith a 58. First time player Zach Kostechko shot an impressive 63.

“Most of the boys did better than the last match and we are slowly getting there,” said Olmsted. “This is a big boys team and there will be lots of competition between them all. The top players with the lowest averages will play in the post season in the new formatted league and district tournaments.”

The girls’ team had a “no contest” match. The Lady Vikings were led by Julia Bailey with a 51 and Jessica Gudgell with a 54. Courtney Ray shot a 60; first time player Freeda Crow a 65; Bynna Gregg  an 81 and Kelsey Whitaker a 101.

“The girls team knows how hard it will be to get to state,” said Olmsted. “Only the top four at our district tournament will advance to state.” Due to low numbers of female players in the league, he said there will only be 20 berths for girls at state playoffs this year.
