On Thursday, May 7, four teams met on the San Juan Island golf course to play in the first district competitions for golfing. Friday Harbor came out on top with 411 strokes in 18 holes of play, while Orcas came in second with 455, La Conner took third place and Shoreline Christian, who was represented by a single team member, played for individual placement.
For Orcas, Taylor Diepenbock took the medal with a score of 80. Henry Bredouw came in with an 80 as well. For the women, Maddy Smith came in third with 112 strokes and Cetacea Stanton also shot 112.
“For tri-district play,” Coach Bobby Olmsted said, “I am playing six boys: Henry Bredouw, Taylor Diepenbock, Alan Coe, Spencer Sare, Joe Boucher, Miles McClosky, and Chris Ghazelle as the alternate. Two girls, Cetacea Stanton and Maddy Smith, also qualified and are going to districts. Overall, the top 19 boys and top seven girls are going to district; currently, there’s a field of 54 boys and 22 girls.
“They all have very good chances of going to state. Out of the eight possible, we will take a fair amount, which is a testament to my players’ consistency.”
State competition is at the Tri-Cities this year.
Wednesday, May 13 kicks off tri-district play for golfing at the Gallery Country Club in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island. The Orcas boys will play on Wednesday for 18 holes, and the girls play on Thursday, May 14. Tee times are done by their seeded average and the best players will go out first. There will be a cut after the first nine; 65 strokes for boys and 75 for girls. More than 10 schools will be present at the tri-district tournament.
