Orcas High School sailing kicks off 2010 season with a big win

When 130 salty young sea-dogs hoisted sails at the 2010 Spring Season Kick Off Regatta, a smoothly handled Orcas bark blew the competition out of the water to claim first place.

Sunny skies and light, shifty winds greeted the fleet of 25 boats for the eight races making up the March 6 regatta.

Orcas boat number one shot off the starting line into clear air on each race, allowing them to stay in front of the main pack of boats. The sailboat was skippered by Jake White and crewed by Annie Ryder in four “A fleet” races, and skippered by Taylor Smith and crewed by Jules Mann in the other four “B fleet” races. At the end of the day, Orcas boat number one was far and away the winner of the regatta, beating out runner-up North Kitsap number one with a combined low score of 19 points. The remaining Orcas boats took 15th and 22nd place.

The Northwest Interscholastic Sailing Association organizes the annual spring kickoff regatta, hosted this year by the Seattle Yacht Club. The students sailed 14′ two-man V15 dinghys, representing schools as far away as Chelan and Portland.
