Orcas Island High School basketball faces tough competition to start 2025

Orcas Island High School girls basketball is back on the court after the holiday break, and 2025 has already brought some tough competition for the Lady Vikings.

On Jan. 2, the Lady Vikings faced Neah Bay, suffering a tough loss with a final score of 59-32. Sofia Mahony Jauregui led the team with 11 points. The following day they played against Pateros (Okanogan County) but fell short again, losing 52-36, despite a 13-point performance by Charlotte Winter Lamphere.

However, on Jan. 4, OIHS bounced back with a strong performance, securing a 50-41 victory over Crosspoint Christian (Bremerton). Winter Lamphere led the charge with another double-digit scoring game, contributing 14 points to the win.

“We played against some very good teams. I’m proud of how we showed up. It was a great experience, and now we know we’ve got a lot of work to do to level up,” said OIHS girls Coach Haley Cruz Winchell.

Up next

The Lady Vikings will head to Concrete for an away game on Jan. 7, set to start at 5:30 p.m. They will then travel to Sound Christian for another road matchup on Jan. 11, with the game tipping off at 3 p.m.

OIHS boys basketball

OIHS boys basketball also faced challenging competition in the opening days of 2025. On Jan. 2, the Vikings lost to Neah Bay with a final score of 64-25. The following day, Orcas played against Lummi and were defeated 71-38. On Jan. 4, the Vikings faced Tulalip Heritage and were again on the losing end, falling 78-59.

On Jan. 7, the Vikings will travel to Concrete for an away game, scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Following that, on Jan. 11, they will face Sound Christian in another road game, with a 3 p.m. tipoff.
