Orcas Island Rowing Association members Jake Zier and Josh Bronn placed third out of 21 boats in the Men’s “B” 2x (double) at the Brentwood Regatta in Mill Bay, Canada the weekend of April 24 to 25. The category “B” refers to the ages of 16 and under.
With a time of 5:24.27 they just narrowly missed second place by 0.59 seconds.
“It was a great race to watch and even more rewarding for Jake and Josh that they medaled,” said head coach Tina Brown. “The boys did us proud.”
Not to be outdone, novices Garett Pietsch and Zack Wolford teamed up with some young men from Bainbridge Island Rowing and took third out of 10 boats in the Men’s Novice B 8+ with a time of 5:25.56.
“It was so great that we could team up with Bainbridge. It’s not the usual way to compete, but since Garett and Zack are our only two novice boys there weren’t any races I could put them in,” Brown said. “Brentwood doesn’t cater to the smaller boats, except at the varsity level. They jumped right in with no complaints and did a wonderful job.”
Pietsch and Wolford also rowed in a Men’s B Novice 4x+ with Bainbridge and placed 8th out of 16 boats.
Other finalists included the Men’s B 4x+ (coxed quad) consisting of coxswain Huxley Smart, stroke Rhys Thompson, three seat Jake Zier, two seat Josh Bronn, and bow seat Max Blackadar. They took fourth out of 16 boats with a time of 5:40.66.
Jacqlynn Zier also had a strong race in the Women’s “A” 1x. Zier advanced to the Petite Final, placing 12th out of the 21 boats with a time of 7:09.25.
The team next travels to Vancouver, Wash. from May 14 to 16 to compete in the Northwest Junior Regional Regatta for the culmination of the season.
