Orcas softball maintains its momentum

The Lady Vikings softball team came on strong in one of their first away games of the season at Nooksack, beating the 1A junior varsity Nooksack team 5-3.

“A highlight for us,” Coach Scott Harris commented, “was that we came back from behind. We lagged by two runs, and our players battled back into the 6th inning, scoring three runs to tie the game. In the seventh inning, we pulled ahead with two runs and our defense held the score and played really smart, watching the ball and not bobbling it in their gloves. They used finesse to get the ball where it needed to be in order to hamper the runners on base. It was a good overall team game for us. The Nooksack ball club was a strong, fair team to go up against and I was very pleased.”

Then on Wednesday, April 1, the Lady Vikings went up against Rainier Christian and beat them 10-0, in 6 innings.

“We played that game at home. We really dominated against Rainier Christian, especially in pitching. Adria Garcia pitched a very strong game. The hitters really took advantage of the Rainier Christian pitcher’s throws; our batters watched very carefully and made the most of what that pitcher sent across the plate,” Harris said. “Everyone at different times throughout the game did an excellent job wherever they were. Anywhere in our batting order, the young women can deliver good solid base hits. We can establish a rally at any point in the line up. Literally, all the team players can step up to the plate.”

In their first league game of the season, however, the Lady Vikings fell 4-3 against La Conner.

“We gave up our first run, and then our second inning was an area where we made several errors that cost us runs in for the other team,” Harris said. “There was good solid pitching from La Conner. We rallied in the 6th inning to score a tying run, but La Conner came back and scored the last run in the 7th inning, terminating our rally.

“We are a very young team, and they are definitely playing beyond their skill set and their age, and so the work they are doing now is admirable and will only stand them in good stead for the future of the team.”

On Monday, April 6 they faced Concrete, their second league game of the season in a home game at Buck Park.
