The Orcas Lady Vikings softball team stunned the Highland Christian Knights 18-6 at home on Monday, March 24. The game was stopped during the bottom of the sixth inning after only one out when the Vikings drove in seven runs to take a commanding lead.

Coach Scott Harris gave his regular starters a rest to give the JV team some valuable playing time for the first three innings. Bobby Lowry was the starting pitcher. With Lindsay Anderson behind the plate, Lowry pitched three solid innings, striking out two players and giving up only two walks.

Shaky Knights pitching, clutch bunting and single base hits put a number of Vikings on base. Jeanie Tran brought Lowry home with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and scored Anderson with a base hit in the second inning. Hannah Sides sacrified in the second inning to score Emily Bodenheimer. Allison O’Toole singled to left field in the first inning to bring April Hofmann home and made a sacrifice in the third inning to bring Ashley McCloskey, Lowry and Anderson in to make the score 9-4.

Defensively, the Vikings were solid. Put-outs by third baseman Hofmann and short-stop Bodenheimer to first baseman Tran prevented the Knights getting on base.

The Lady Vikings varsity team rotated into the line-up during the last three innings of the game. Power-hitters Lanie Padbury and Cara Peacock cleaned up the bases and the game was called when Orcas led by more than 10 runs.
