On August 10, Kyle Hofmann, offensive lineman and tackle for the Orcas Viking football team, will start his college career with the University of Montana Grizzlies in Missoula, Montana on a full ride football scholarship.

Hofmann, who also attended a Washington State Cougars football camp and was recognized out of 600 players as the most valuable player on the offensive line, was invited by those coaches and staff as a walk-on, but decided that the Missoula staff and coaches were more his style.

Mark Hofmann, Kyle’s father, said, “He went to a three-day camp in Missoula in June of 2008 and the coaches and staff checked him out there and liked what they saw. At the end of the camp, they offered him a full ride football scholarship. The Missoula offer was very generous. Kyle really liked the staff and coaches there and, as well, they really got along well with him. As far as we know, Kyle is the only one from Orcas that’s been offered a full ride scholarship, as far as athletics go in Division 1 sports.”

The University of Montana Grizzlies played in the collegiate national championships this year for NCCA Division 1, 2A, and Hofmann, an offensive lineman, will join the Grizzlies and will begin competing for playing time based on his performance in opening fall practice.
