Lopez Lobos played a slippery. mud-filled football game against the Lummi Blackhawks on Lopez home turf on Saturday, Oct 4.
At the September regular scheduled meeting of the Lopez Island School Board of Directors Coach Brad Smith, long-time Lopez boy’s basketball coach announced that he would not be seeking to continue coaching basketball for the school, due to personal reasons.

After fighting an intense battle on the soccer pitch, the Orcas Girls’ Soccer Team finally fell 2-1 to Friday Harbor in the second of a five minute golden goal attempt that had both teams struggling for supremacy. Friday Harbor finally scored the definitive goal two minutes into the second five minute overtime to win the game 2-1.
On Saturday, Sept. 27 at an away game on Inglemoor’s home turf, the Orcas Viking football team beat Inglemoor Junior Varsity 21-7.
On Tuesday Sept. 23 at Orcas High School, the Orcas girls’ volleyball team took on the Friday Harbor Wolverines and beat them in three games out of five. Coach Greg Sasan said of his team: “With these young people, it’s always about the mental game. We talked a lot about leaving everything that didn’t belong on the court outside before we went on, and the women took that seriously and played a strong mental game.
On Tuesday, Sept. 23, in an away game at Shoreline Christian, the Lobos played an intensely vigorous game against the number two ranked soccer team in the state, Shoreline Christian. The Lobos were able to hold the stronger team to 0-0 in the first half of the two 40-minute halves. Coach Richard Tetu reported, “Before the game even started, the referees told all of us that they allowed on-hands pushing in this game. They weren’t even going to yellow or red card for it unless it was over the top. Our players had to adjust quickly to this mindset and they came out fighting.”
The Lopez volleyball team played and won in a four game match against Skykomish on Sept. 23, at Skykomish, near Monroe, Washington. The scores that day were:
The Orcas Vikings’ boys soccer team left their competitors and fans breathless, but the team had steam to spare, apparently, as they vanquished their Grace Academy foes, 5-0 on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The Orcas Island Yacht Club and the Friday Harbor Sailing Club are seeking participants for the 21st Annual Round the County Sailboat Race on Nov. 8 and 9. The race circles the San Juan Islands archipelago that comprises San Juan County Washington considered by many to be one of the more beautiful sailing venues on earth.
In the first game of the Interisland Volleyball Tournament at Lopez on Sept. 20, the Lopez Lobos succumbed to the Friday Harbor Wolverines in the best played 3 out of 5 games. Friday Harbor won the match overall.

The Lopez Lobos soccer team won handily, 8-2, at Arlington Christian on an overcast early fall day at Arlington Christian School. Head coach for the Lopez soccer team, Richard Têtu, commented, “The young people played really well. Within the first several minutes of the game, Arlington Christian scored two goals, making it 2-0 in the first several minutes. Our kids had to learn quickly which players were the threats, go there, and be aggressive and efficient shutting them down.”
