On Tuesday, Oct. 7 the girls soccer team traveled to Concrete and beat their opposition 3-0. Coach Chama Anderson noted, “I think that while we played very well overall, traveling off-island does affect the team. They usually arrive early at these functions because of the ferry and they can get worn out from simply waiting. We all must learn to use our time more effectively in these situations.”
Last Tuesday, Orcas lost to Shoreline in three games: 24/26, 16/25, 13/25. Coach Greg Sasan said, “We had them 23/17, and then it just went downhill from there. We simply never found our groove. My hat is off to Shoreline. They served really well, and we just weren’t there mentally and we couldn’t pass. The worst thing was that for standings reasons, we really wanted to win this one, but it just wasn’t going to come together. It was one of those times that we all played badly…it wasn’t just one or two players.”
The Lopez Lobos soccer team won both its games last week, against La Conner 7-3 on Tuesday and Arlington on Thursday with a score of 8-1.
The Orcas Viking boys soccer team had a rough beginning to their week, losing 2-0 at Providence Christian on Tuesday Oct. 7. Coach Matt Stolmeier remarked, “The team never quite got it together; we had some logistical issues finding the right pitch to play on and when we finally arrived, it was a sand field, which is not our usual playing surface. We just weren’t mentally prepared for that and it really affected our passing game.”
The Lopez volleyball team took part in a big volleyball tournament on Saturday in Mount Vernon, and played against a variety of teams in a long day at the net. It was a rousing sight to behold…players gave everything, diving to the floor to make saves that made onlookers gasp in shock, spiking the ball for a kill, sending flaming serves just across the net for aces and producing volleys that made the matches look like a coordinated ballet rather than play happening in real time.
The Lopez football team dominated the game against Clallum Bay last Saturday, despite several penalties.

We had 18 shots on goal and Grace only had one shot on our goal. I was very pleased at how quickly we covered the other players and took advantage of their errors. This allowed players to make more accurate passes and out-dribble the opponent. They played very authoritatively.”
