The Orcas High School Sailing Team traveled to Seattle this past weekend and participated in the Sail Sandpoint Team Race Regatta.

They were greeted to light shifty winds on Saturday morning with a rain and sleet combination that was chilling and made for tricky racing. The team lost some matches they should have won, said sailing coach Burke Thomas

The breeze filled in Sunday enabling 68 races to be completed over the two days. Orcas showed steady improvement over the weekend and made the championship round Sunday afternoon, where they went undefeated. The Orcas match against North Kitsap in the championship round is the best high school team race I have seen in the Northwest, a classic battle from start to finish, with Orcas winning at the finish line, said Burke. Next up for the team will be a head to head match against Port Townsend this Friday at Orcas.

The team spent Saturday evening, after the race, at the North Sail Lofts in Seattle numbering sails for Northwest District of the Interscholastic Sailing Association in preparation for the Mallory Trophy, May 11 to 13.
