Softball: Orcas is knocking off the spring-break rust

The Lady Vikes notched up a league win against Darrington this week, with non-league losses to Lynden Christian and Seattle Lutheran. The Vikings beat Darrington in five innings on April 21, by the 10 run rule at 13-3. “That game was really good because we played a really sound defensive game, started to knock off the rust, the team really worked together well,” said Harris. “Our pitchers were sound and tight to the strike zone and our bats were really alive.” Lanie Padbury hit a double and a triple, and both April Hofmann and Emily Bodenhamer hit a triple as well.

It was the second game of a double-header that began with a non-league game against Seattle Lutheran, from the SeaTac league. The game concluded early at four and a half innings when time ran out with Seattle Lutheran ahead 5-1. Padbury hit a home run, Bodenhamer a triple and Hofmann a double.

“We hit the ball well. We did not play our best defense,” said Harris. “I attribute that to still being rusty coming off of spring break. Four of their runs came off of our defensive errors. For us the biggest thing was … just getting back to the rhythm of playing after having 12 days off. (Seattle Lutheran) was a very sound team, not a great team.”

Harris said the girls may see the other team again at Tri-Districts.

The Lady Vikes lost a non-league game to Lynden Christian on April 19, 8-3. Lynden Christian is a 1A team and the Vikings were missing two of their All-state players, Padbury and O’Toole.

“It was our first day back from spring break. It showed; we just were not in sync as a team,” said Harris. But the girls had picked up speed by the time they met Darrington in league play to put another win behind them.

The Vikings later saw two key losses on Saturday, April 17 in a double-header against the Wolverines in Friday Harbor, with scores of 5-3 and 11-2. And on Tuesday, April 20, after the Sounder went to press, the girls faced off against their other big rivals, the La Conner Braves.

The Vikings’ next home games, held at Buck Park, will be on April 27 at 4:30 p.m. against Friday Harbor, and a double-header on April 30 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. against Concrete.
