The Lopez Lobos 2008 Sports Awards

2008 was a prolific and fruitful year for football, soccer and volleyball at Lopez High School.

2008 was a prolific and fruitful year for football, soccer and volleyball at Lopez High School.

The Lopez football team won the WIAA Distinguished Scholastic Award for a team GPA of 3.07 as well as winning the 2008 Pacific Coast League Team Sportsmanship Award and garnering the 2008 John Trotto Team Sportsmanship Award, a great honor for the program. The Trotto trophy is unique in that it is awarded by the football officials themselves, who rate the attitude and sportsmanlike conduct of every team in their league. They tally the results at the end of the year and present the Trotto trophy to the highest scorer.

The football team also had players selected to be part of the Pacific Coast League. Kevin Dengler represented Lopez in the first team, while Leland Nopson represented Lopez in the second team. The Special Teams Player of the year Co-Winners went to Lopezian Kevin Dengler and Gale Jefferson, from Lummi.

In volleyball, the team participated in the Bi-District Tournament and took the 2008 Volleyball Team WIAA Distinguished Scholastic Award, with a Team GPA of 3.48. NW B League All League Volleyball Selections 2008 Most Valuable Player was Emily PostVanderBurg, a senior from Lopez. Emily PostVanderBurg also represented Lopez Island in the first team, while Gwenna Coiley and Sarah Stanley represented Lopez in the second team.

In soccer, which went to tri-district in the playoffs, the Lopez soccer team was awarded the 2008 Boys Soccer Team WIAA Academic State Champions 2008 with a Team GPA of 3.677. They also won the 2008 NW B Team Sportsmanship Award, while Tahoma Wrubleski was named representative of Lopez in the NW B League’s first team and honorable mention went to both Sebastian Lasbo and Jordan Haber of Lopez.
