“Bush really just had one player that could score, so we focused on defending her, but we played good defense overall,” said Coach Gregg Sasan.

The Viking girls pulled away with a league win against Cedar Park Christian 62-35, with Orcas scoring led by Hannah Brunner-Gaydos sinking 26, Rogers 21, Bethany Hansen 7 and Katy with 5.

“They only had six players on the bench, so we just ran at them the whole game. Our defense played well too,” said Sasan.

Mt. Vernon Christian handed the Orcas girls their first league loss 53-36. The Vikings kept pace until being outscored 16-9 by the Hurricanes in fourth quarter, according to Sasan.

“MVC is a very disciplined team with three good shooters who all hit double digits,” Sasan said.

Orcas scoring was led by Brunner-Gaydos with 10, Katy 8, Halle Thompson 6 and Rogers with 5.

The girls wrapped up the week with a non-league win against the Lopez Lobos 73-39, with Viking scoring led by Brunner-Gaydos with 35, Rogers 8, Emma 7 and Joanne Mietzner and Halle Thompson both with 6.

“We had a much bigger bench than Lopez, so I was able to bring up some younger players. We play LaConner next and they will be a real test for us,” Sasan said.

The boys opened the season with a 55-41 loss to a strong Bush Academy team in a non-league contest.

“This was brand new system, we played with a  lot of intensity, but we did not have the depth Bush had with 6 senior starters. We are learning to play with more maturity,” said Coach Corey Wiscomb.

Orcas scoring was led by Miles Harlow  hitting 10, Brother Murphy 9, Aidan Kruse 7 and Pasha and Vanya Bullock both with 6.

The boys nailed their first league win against Cedar Park Christian 59-47 with scoring lead by Aidan Kruse with 19, P. Bullock 14, Murphy 12, V. Bullock 8 and Harlow 6.

“Pretty exciting game for us. We knew we could match up but were down seven at half,” Wisomb said. “Kind of a coach’s dream. We made some adjustments, the guys go out and do it and it works. We had almost a 20-point swing in the second half.”

The boys lost their second league game to Mt. Vernon Christian 46-31.

“I think we were 2-20 for 3-point shots, we had good open looks, but shots just didn’t drop,” Wiscomb said. “Our defense played really well. We kept the Hurricanes to 9 first-quarter points. We can play with them, and I look forward to playing them again.”

The boys finished the week with a non-league win against the Lopez Lobos 50-31 in what was called “our friendly island rivalry.”

Orcas scoring was led by Kruse with 12, Harlow 9 and Jordan Randolph and Pasha both with 6.

Orcas next travels to LaConner for a league contest.
