The Orcas Vikings football team shut out the Darrington Loggers 27-0 on Oct. 22 at Dahl Field.

The Vikings improved to 2-2 in league play and are in position for a second place finish in the Northwest-Seatac League. Second place finish would qualify them for the playoffs. Their two league losses were both by one point including a double overtime loss to the undefeated Crusaders from Tacoma Baptist.

“We must continue to win to control our own destiny,” said head coach Scott Harris. “I’m proud of the boys for overcoming the adversity of the miserable playing conditions.”

On a very wet day the Viking offense was limited to 193 total yards but they made the most out of their opportunities. Orcas scored  on their third possession on a 20-yard touchdown run by Aubrey Schermerhorn.

Weather conditions were deteriorating as the Vikings took the 6-0 lead into the second quarter.

Devon Stanzione scored on a 31 yard pass from Robbie Padbury, making the score 12-0 after a missed two-point play.

Freshman Joey Susol came up with the play of the game when he blocked a punt deep in Logger territory. The Vikings quickly cashed in with an eight yard touchdown pass from Padbury to Keenan Phalan making the score 19-0 after a successful extra point with 5:40 minutes left in the half.

Orcas put the game out of reach early in the second half when Schermerhorn pounded the ball into the end zone behind outstanding blocking by the offensive line for his second rushing touchdown. A successful two-point conversion were the final points of the game.

The Vikings hunkered down into a run offense for the rest of the game in order to use the clock while the younger players got some valuable time on the field.

Dan Briggs had an interception while Stanzione had 12 tackles. Schermerhorn ended his day with 67 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns while Phalan had three catches for 35 yards and a touchdown.

The Vikings battle the Concrete Lions at home on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:30 p.m. in what is basically a loser out game for both teams.
