On Saturday, Sept. 27 at an away game on Inglemoor’s home turf, the Orcas Viking football team beat Inglemoor Junior Varsity 21-7.
Coach Dennis Dahl said of his players, “We played well defensively, with fewer penalties than before. We did have a couple of people out with illness, and a couple of injuries, so we had only 20 guys who were suited up for the game and healthy enough to play.” Inglemoor JV, conversely, suited up 49 of their players for the day.
In scoring, Jacob Hansen made good on a two-yard run in the first quarter after the Vikings offense drove the Inglemoor defense back, capitalizing on the excellent field position and pushing the ball over the line of scrimmage. Taylor Diepenbrock kicked the extra point in, and on their next scoring drive, Viking Seadrick Wooding scored on a 35 yard run after Jacob Hansen blocked an Inglemoor punt. Brandon Hampton got a 24 yard run on a blocked punt, and Tyler Nigretto followed up the touchdown with a three-yard run for a two point conversion.
After their victory, the Orcas Vikings went on both an educational and recreational field trip, and attended the University of Washington Husky football game against Stanford later that Saturday afternoon. The Vikings were able to see the Huskies warm up in their pre-game session and learned a great deal from the event.
The fighting Vikings play again on Oct. 4, on their home turf against Concrete at noon.
